The new Flex-Hone tool — invented and manufactured by Los Angeles-based Brush Research Manufacturing — enables gun owners to quickly and efficiently perform professional-level gun maintenance and conditioning.
According to the press release, the Flex-Hone is instantly recognizable due to its unique appearance, which is characterized by hundreds of small, abrasive globules permanently mounted to flexible nylon filaments. Each globule has independent suspension which is self-centering, self-aligning to the bore, and self-compensating for wear. In addition, the stem of the tool fits into the chuck of any handheld electric drill, allowing the end user to quickly clean out passages and bores of many types of firearms.
The Flex-Hone comes in several grits and sizes, giving it a wide application within the firearms world with sizes small enough to accommodate a 22 caliber weapon and large enough to service a 10 gauge shotgun. Standard barrel hones for shotguns come in lengths of 34 inches, in 10-, 12-, 16- and 20-gauge sizes.
“Flexible cylinder hones remove gunpowder, wad, casing and bullet residue to provide a superior finish for any cylinder, slide, chamber, magazine tube or smooth bore barrel of any size,” the press release reads. “This helps improve the function and extend the life of the firearm while reducing the need for expensive gunsmithing. The process is simple and only requires a means to hold the gun securely—for instance, in a padded vise—and a low speed electric drill.
“Many gun owners already choose to perform their own maintenance and conditioning themselves,” the press release continues. “However, an equal number often find it difficult—or even impossible—to achieve the proper surface finish by using available options such as steel or bronze wool, sandpaper wrapped around a dowel, brushes, and other homemade devices. As a result, they often turn over such tasks to a professional gunsmith at some expense.
“Instead, making this work easier is the process of “honing” to smooth nicked or damaged metal or remove residue or corrosion while leaving the base metal undisturbed.”
