The Rape Crisis Center in Savannah, Georgia hosted a self-defense class aimed at women who are heading off to college this fall.
According to WTOC, the “Safe at College” class, which is two hours long, builds self-confidence, awareness, and personal safety skills.
Due to the fact that college-age girls are frequently targeted for rape and sexual assault, organizers said they wanted to give participants the tools to protect themselves.
Todd Mashburn, a certified Krav Maga instructor, teaches the class.
“What we want to do is provide them with enough information and education whereby they go on their college campuses more aware of their surroundings,” said Kesha Gibson-Carter, executive director of the Savannah Rape Crisis Center. “Understanding the value of traveling in pairs, not leaving their friend alone, watching what they drink, when they drink and how much they drink.”
As WTOC reports, the class took place on Sunday, August 3, and it featured many mother-daughter teams, as both are likely to benefit from taking the class.
