A new self defense program in West Chester, Ohio is teaching young women how to protect themselves on a college campus.
“We really wanted to give these first-time college students who are going to be on their own for the first time, the tools needed to help them protect and defend themselves from possible threats,” said Michelle Berling, Community Affairs Officer with the West Chester Police Department, which teaches the class in coordination with Lakota Schools.
According to WCPO, the program, which is called SAFE (Self-defense and Awareness through Fundamental Education), was created as a result of parents asking for training for their daughters.
Most of the classes will involve self-defense training with a focus on rape prevention and awareness, as well as personal protection and self-awareness.
As WCPO reports, the 10-hour program has already been taken by students at Lakota West High School and Lakota East High School in April and May. However, the West Chester Police Department will teach two additional classes this summer, which will be open to all recent female graduates.
The SAFE classes, which are free, will be offered June 16 through 20, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and June 23 through 27, 1 p.m. to 3 pm.
