Students Seek Lift of Ban of Concealed-Carry on Campus

A petition to lift a ban on concealed-carry on campus was created by the students of the University of Michigan.

The group is circulating the call to the Board of Regents following a string of armed robberies last fall. Currently, students are subject to disciplinary action if they use, possess or store any weapon on university premises, according to the school’s Department of Public Safety.

Susan Eckstine, a representative of the university’s Young Republicans, backs the idea of concealed carry. “If I was able to carry a firearm on campus, I’d feel a lot more safer to protect myself from a life-threatening situation,” Eckstine said.

Others signed the petition in support of defending themselves. The request faces opposition from some students who feel the ban should stay in place. “You’re only creating more potential violence by adding more weapons than the other way around,” said sophomore Jennifer Lakritz.
