Springfield Armory has made a lot of waves over the course of the last year. The Springfield Hellcat kicked off a run for the manufacturer that hasn’t slowed down, including the PDW, EVAC, and Ronin 1911. The variety of releases from Springfield and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. Springfield just announced its first-ever bolt-action hunting rifle in the form of the Model 2020 Waypoint.

First Look at the Springfield Model 2020 Waypoint

The Model 2020 is the new rifle series and the Waypoint is the first entry in that series. We just got our hands on the Springfield Model 2020 on Sept. 23 at the 2020 Athlon Outdoors Rendezvous in Idaho; that’s how new it is. Springfield spent years developing the rifle before it felt it was ready for release. The result is a .75 MOA accuracy guarantee when used with match-grade factory ammo.

The build is truly impressive, but there are a couple of elements that stand out. Firstly, the carbon fiber stock sheds significant weight. Springfield worked with AG Composites to develop the stock. The stock gets weights down to as low as 6 pounds, 9 ounces — super light for easy mobility.

The second aspect that stood out on the Model 2020 Waypoint is the action; it’s one of the smoothest we’ve run … seriously. Springfield included dual locking lugs on the fluted bolt, which run smoothly down EDM raceways for easy engagement. It also included an optimized extraction cam, which provides reliable extraction. Additionally, the bolt features dual cocking cams for ease of operation and toolless disassembly for maintenance.

The Springfield Model 2020 Waypoint is available in 6.5 PRC (tested here), 6mm Creedmoor, 6.5 Creedmoor, and .308 Win. MSRP ranges from $1,699 to $2,399, pending the selections you make (stock, finish, and barrel).
