Police shootings face scrutiny at a level never seen before. But body camera footage often supports an officer’s actions. Two Santa Fe police officers experienced such a scenario June 7. The officers issued multiple warnings before finally dropping a suspect brandishing a huge knife.

Santa Fe Police Drop Suspect Wielding Massive Machete
The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Joseph Galassini, now faces multiple charges, according to the Sante Fe Next Mexican. Charges include multiple counts of aggravated battery and assault with a deadly weapon, along with aggravated assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon.
Body camera footage shows the deadly weapon, a massive machete. Galassini waves the blade at officers and also approaches them multiple times. Two officers clearly issue multiple commands and warnings. Finally, an officer fires multiple shots, dropping the suspect.
“Incidents like these are traumatic for everyone involved and I hope that all of the victims, our officers and Mr. Galassini are able to heal both physically and emotionally,” said police Chief Andrew Padilla in a statement. “We look forward to the completion of the New Mexico State Police report and their findings. At the completion of the District Attorney’s Office review and determination, we will initiate our internal affairs investigation.”
Galassini received medical treatment at a local hospital. Upon release, police booked him into the Santa Fe jail, according to the Sante Fe Next Mexican.
