Traditions and Federal Premium partnered recently, and the fruit of that collaboration might just represent the biggest advancement in muzzleloading since the inline system. The new Federal FireStick, and the Traditions muzzleloaders that load it, truly represent new ground. In short, the system drastically eases the loading process, potentially making shooters more accurate than ever before.
Federal Firestick Details
The Federal FireStick is a pre-measured, self-contained powder charge. It consists of a precisely filled polymer capsule, using strict specifications at Federal’s ammunition plant. It delivers an exact charge of the all-new, ultra-clean black powder substitute, Hodgdon Triple 8 granular powder. The sealed capsule utilizes a breakable front section (cap) that completely encases the power charge.
The primary benefit of the FireStick is safety, according to Federal. But the convenience and accuracy potential jumps out to any veteran muzzleloader. It also delivers ease of cleaning, simplicity and more.
Operation of the FireStick system proves simple. Firstly, the bullet loads from the muzzle, seating on top of a bullet shelf inside the barrel. The shooter then opens the break-open action. The FireStick installs into the open breech to seat just behind the bullet shelf and seated bullet. A 209 Muzzleloader primer inserts into the FireStick propellant capsule to charge the powder. Finally, the shooter closes the action, pulls back the hammer and fires.
Traditions NitroFire Rifles
Traditions scored an exclusive arrangement upon the initial launch. The company lists several different NitroFire .50 caliber rifles on its website. The lineup includes black and camo stocks, Cerakote finishes and models with or without optics. Prices range from $550 to $1,220. For more information, visit traditionsfirearms.com.
The FireStick sells in 10-count packs and also carries an MSRP of $26.95. Federal offers two versions: 100 grains or 120 grains of Hodgdon Triple 8. Users can expect projectile velocities equal to or better than what they get with equivalent loads from traditional in-line muzzleloaders, according to Federal. For more information on Hodgdon Triple 8, visit hodgdon.com.
Because most states define a muzzleloader by loading a projectile manually down the muzzle, Federal says FireStick is legal for big game in many states. However, hunters should check their local and state game laws prior to taking afield. For more information, visit federalpremium.com.
