Defense contractor Huntington Ingalls Industries has delivered USS America (LHA-6) to the U.S. Navy. According to IHS Jane’s 360, this ship is the lead ship of a new amphibious ship class which is designed to enhance the operations of MV-22 Osprey tiltrotors and F-35B Lightning II joint strike fighters for the Marines.
The delivery ceremony took place on April 10 at Ingalls Shipbuilding shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
As IHS Jane’s reports, the new America-class ships are replacing the Tarawa-class of amphibious ships. The USS America and USS Tripoli (LHA-7) each have an enlarged hangar and deck for aircraft maintenance.
The USS America will be commissioned in late 2014 in San Francisco, IHS Jane’s said. It will be based in San Diego.
