Weatherby Vanguard High Country: High-End Bolt Action for Under $1,000

Wyoming’s Weatherby Inc. has two different rifles. Well, that’s not entirely true. Weatherby has two different rifle lines, and those lines currently have 34 different variants. Needless to say, Weatherby is a rifle giant. And one of the newest offerings is the Weatherby Vanguard High Country.

The Scoop on the Weatherby Vanguard High Country

We’re big fans of Weatherby. You might remember back in 2019 when the company made the move from California to pro-2A Wyoming. Smart move. And now it’s producing firearms at a rapid pace.

We had Weatherby at the 2020 Athlon Outdoors Rendezvous. The reps brought a number of guns with them, but we wanted to focus on the Vanguard High Country. Weatherby built the new rifle on its Vangaurd platform — as opposed to it Mark V platform. It’s available in nine different calibers. Those include: .257 Weatherby Magnum, .270 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, .300 Weatherby Magnum, .300 Win Mag, .308 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, and 6.5-300 Weatherby Magnum. So right off the bat, a lot of options to choose from.

The finish is spectacular. It’s a black stock with the sponge camo paint job. The stock features a Monte Carlo design, complete with a right-side palm swell and textured forearm and grip areas. Meanwhile, the 26- or 28-inch barrel (that includes the Accubrake but size depends on caliber) also has a tough finish. Weatherby opted for a Flat Dark Earth Cerakote finish on the barrel, as well as on all of the metalwork to improve weather and corrosion resistance. It’s also fluted.

Like all Weatherby rifles, the Vanguard High Country is guaranteed sub-MOA. Weatherby guarantees three-shot group of .99 inches or less at 100 yards. The rifle weighs in at just more than 7 pounds, so it’s certainly light enough to carry around as hunting rifle. Lastly, MSRP comes in at $999.
