The PWS UXR comprises something different. It takes a whole bunch of elements from the AR/MR platform. Then it borrows heavily from concepts codified in piston-driven systems like the FN SCAR or ACR. But then the Primary Weapons Systems User XChange Rifle blends it all together to create a modular, multi-caliber battle rifle quite unlike the rest upon its full release.
PWS UXR
We got our hands on the UXR at the most recent Athlon Outdoors Rendezvous, and simply stated, the rifle impressed. And before you scoff at another piston-driven platform, it’s the full measure of the line that grabbed our attention.
The UXR launches initially in .223 Wylde and .300 BLK. But the line, when fully developed, will give shooters the ability to switch between numerous chamberings via caliber conversion kits. Additional chamberings in .308 Win and 8.6 BLK are planned for later this year. But we fully expect anything and everything from 7.62×39 to 6.5 Creedmoor rolled into conversion kits as well, as the platform lends itself to present offerings in everything from door-kicking to PRS cartridges.
Shooters can quickly convert to alternate calibers/cartridges on the same serialized platform–the upper receiver–after exchanging just three parts–the magazine well, bolt head and barrel. In a firearms world full of modularity these days, the UXR still impresses. Three interchangeable magazine wells deliver a wide range of caliber capability. The patent-pending system brings real innovation into a crowded market space.
But PWS didn’t stop there. The rifle also utilizes a a unique bore-evacuation chamber incorporated into the barrel. Teamed with the long-stroke piston operating system, the UXR is shockingly tame. Our range time confirmed as such, dumping magazines quickly on steel to good effect.
The platform utilizes a host of component upgrades, including a folding stock design, adjustable length of pull and adjustable cheek piece, along with fully-ambidextrous controls. Finally, and this may be one of the more impressive aspects of the system, the UXR delivers a return to zero after conversions measures a mere 1/2-minute of angle. That should keep you on target, no matter the caliber, from entry gun out to long-range DMR.
