We all know an old gun guy whose standard response to any conversation is “What did you say?” Unfortunately, we come to the realization that protecting our hearing hasn’t always been a priority. Thanks in part to the NRA and it’s training programs, that has become a thing of the past.

Honeywell has been at the forefront of the hearing protection movement with more than 30 years of continuous technological innovation. I got a hands on — or ears on, I guess — experience with the Honeywell Impact Sport BOLT Digital Electronic Earmuffs at the 2018 Athlon Outdoors Rendezvous.
What’s So Special About the Honeywell Impact Sport BOLT Digital Earmuffs?
The new earmuffs, like anything that’s been around for a minute, are an upgrade over previous models.
The Impact Sport Bolt Earmuffs amplify ambient and low frequency sounds up to five times to a peak of 82dB. This makes it infinitely easier for the wearer to hear range commands and conduct conversation. Having worn them for the entirety of the Athlon Outdoors Rendezvous, this was absolutely the case.
“But what happens when there’s gunfire?”
Glad you asked. Amplification automatically shuts off at 82dB, attenuating gunfire noise with a lightning-fast .5-millisecond attack time.
Couple that audio performance with a slim, comfortable and ergonomic design that uses one control knob, and you’ve got yourself a winner.
The original Impact sport muffs have been an industry standard for years; you can find them in the range bags of gun owners all over the country.
I own at least five sets of the older model. The electronic muff has been my go-to for students for a number of years. Enabling the student to hear range commands and their surrounding creates a more productive learning environment.
The Bolt earmuffs come in at a little higher price point. Included in the package with the earmuffs are an auxiliary cable — for listening to music or that phone call that inevitably comes while you are on the range — extra ear cup cushions, two AAA batteries, and a belt clip.
Normal MSRP is $129.95, but the earmuffs are currently on sale for $89.95.
Between improving range safety and actively attacking hearing loss, the Impact Sport BOLTs are a no-brainer. Honestly, do you want to be the guy yelling, “What’d you say?” for the rest of your life?
