When it comes to automatic knives, Pro-Tech is a name that makes its place at the top of many lists. Many don’t realize that when you buy an automatic from another company, Pro-Tech might be responsible for the action. However, automatic knives are not legal everywhere. With this in mind, Pro-Tech offers the Tactical Response 5 (TR-5 SA.1) with assisted opening.
The Pro-Tech Tactical Response 5 (TR-5 SA.1)
As stated, the TR-5 features the patented Matthew Lerch spring assist mechanism. As a result, the 3.25-inch blade is brought to bear with the speed of a Pro-Tech coil fired auto. Unlike Pro-Tech’s autos, opening the TR-5 requires pushing forward on the thumb stud (not outward to the side). Thereupon, the coil spring takes over and snaps the blade out the rest of the way to its full 7.60 inches. Once open, the blade stays in secure lockup, via the thumb lock.
Nestled in the black T6-6061 aluminum handle is the CPM-S35VN stainless steel drop point blade. CPM-S35VN is considered premium steel that has great wear resistance and edge retention properties.
The rear spacer is constructed of 416 stainless steel and features an oversized lanyard hole and skull crusher/glass breaker. With an overall weight of 3.6 ounces, the TR-5 is an ideal EDC blade, with little footprint in the pocket. Likewise, the deep carry stainless steel pocket clip, in right-hand, tip-up only, keeps the TR-5 out of sight until needed. The deep carry coupled with snappy assisted opening makes the TR-5 a perfect self-defense option as well.
Although the assisted opening function is legal where automatic openers are not, it is still advisable to check your local laws for blade length. With a blade length of 3.25 inches, the TR-5 might exceed the legal length in your jurisdiction.
