VIDEO: US Congresswoman Lee Says AR-15s Use .50 Caliber Bullets

U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee made comments so outrageous recently we could hardly believe our ears. The Democrat out of Texas, while pushing for increased gun control policies, described the horror of the AR-15.

“It is as heavy as 10 boxes that you might be moving,” said Jackson Lee, in a video published by washingtonexaminer.com. “And the bullet that is utilized, a .50 caliber, these kinds of bullets need to be licensed and do not need to be on the street.”

Wait, what?

So the AR-15 rifle, as we all know, typically weighs in around seven or eight pounds. Tac it up with tons of accessories, maybe you get another couple pounds on there. But 10 moving boxes? If you’re moving around six- or seven-pound boxes, it’s gonna take a while. In other words, you’re doing it wrong.

Congresswoman Lee Makes Outlandish Comments

Then there’s the .50-cal comment. I really don’t even know where to begin. Is it possible she picked up an AR in .50 Beowulf? No, what she really meant was the big, bad .50 BMG.

So let’s play Devil’s Advocate here for just a bit. She’s just a bit confused, right. She encountered a super-heavy black gun, looks to her like an AR-15, fires a .50-caliber bullet. Maybe she held the mighty Barrett M82. That makes sense. She clearly doesn’t know guns so much, and it’s a big, black, scary semi-automatic shooting those big ol’ elephant gun-looking rounds.

And that would be ok if your grandmother had said all that mess. Or your cousin Tito. Or Floyd the barber. Or even Mushmouth. But if you’re proposing gun control legislation as a sitting elected official of the U.S. House of Representatives, you’d better damn well know what you’re talking about.

This level of incompetence is beyond offensive. In fact, you simply can’t be this wrong as a member of Congress. This is a bill she is introducing. Acting while so badly misinformed, attempting to initiate legislation based on an abundance of inaccurate data, represents a perversion of the democratic system at best. At worst, Lee demonstrates gross negligence and more, in a clear attempt at political gain.

It’s one thing to argue against fact or even opinion. It’s quite another to counter nonsense such as this.
