Left-handed shooters never have it easy. For all of its adaptability, Mossberg saw that the ever-popular 500 was lacking in one regard: There weren’t models tailor-made for left-handed shooters. Now that problem has been addressed.

In fact, the idea for a left-handed Mossberg shotgun, though considered for many years, was only precipitated by modern CAD capabilities when one of the company’s manufacturing engineers—who happens to be left-handed—was working on a receiver drawing.
Making what is in essence a mirror image of a firearm did present a few challenges, but Mossberg’s engineers were able to work these out quickly. There are also many crossover parts between the 500 and 500L, and the key differences are really in the receiver, barrel, bolt and some internal parts that had to mirror the right-handed components. This allowed for a shotgun that was truly designed with lefties in mind yet retained everything that made the 500 such a tried and tested shotgun.

In the new L-Series line, Mossberg has introduced six tactical models, including a nine-shot version based on the military-approved, battle-hardened 590A1 scattergun.
