Barrett MRAD SMR: New ‘Single Mission Rifle’ Lightens Standard MRAD

Few bolt guns have enjoyed the wide acclaim of the U.S. military as the Barrett MRAD of late. And with good reason. With its modular design and caliber interchangeability, the MRAD is ready for nearly any mission. But for civilians requiring a different set of traits from a precision bolt gun, the new Barrett MRAD SMR fills the gap.

Barrett MRAD SMR Details

We got hands on with the Barrett MRAD SMR at the recent Athlon Outdoors Rendezvous. And just like its predecessor, it left us completely impressed.

“We’re here to launch the new MRAD SMR,” said Mountie Mizer, Barrett. The SMR stands for Single Mission Rifle. This was something that was requested by consumers as a result of the MRAD that we’ve had in the commercial market for the last several years.

The MRAD platform, of course, made big news recently, winning the coveted Advanced Sniper Rifle contract. That solicitation called for barrel interchangeability and multiple calibers. Our warfighters demanded a modular system to take into any battle. And Barrett delivered. But civilians don’t need to win a war, so to speak.

“What is the notable difference of this gun versus our folding stock version is the fact that it is a fixed stock, fixed barrel. Commercial shooters that want to shoot long range, they don’t necessarily need a folding stock. And depending on the shooter, they don’t care if they can remove the barrel and replace the barrel. So this fills a niche requested by the barrel.

The MRAD SMR will come in seven different cartridges. Chamberings include .308 Win., 6.5 Creedmoor, .300 Win. Mag., .300 PRC, .338 Lapua Mag., .300 Norma Mag., .338 Norma Mag.

“The main difference with this gun, minus the features, is the fact that without the folding stock, without the fixed barrel, you’re not giving up accuracy. It has the same accuracy as our defense MRAD model.”
