Barrett has given us early access to the new REC10 rifle. We’ve been sitting on this one for a while and it’s a doozy.
Barrett may be best known for its .50 BMG and its MRAD, but the manufacturer also makes some of the best designed and well-built AR rifles available. My earliest testing of the REC7, one of the first reliable and duty ready 6.8 SPC rifles, proved Barrett’s ability to build a combat ready AR.

Later testing of Barrett’s Model 98B and MRAD proved the manufacturer has it all.
Barrett builds some of the finest rifles out there and its latest, the REC10, is no exception.
Shooting the rifle 16-inch carbine at the first ever Athlon Outdoors Rendezvous in Gateway, Colo., provided first-hand experience.
REC10 Build
Barrett’s REC10 starts with precision-machined billet upper and lower receivers. Perfectly matched, each is built with weight savings in mind without compromising strength. Controls are ambidextrous including the bolt catch, magazine release and 45-degree safety.
The ALG Defenses QMS (Quality Mil-Spec) trigger is crisp, predictable and completely reliable under the harshest conditions. The matching BRS M-Lok handguard is slim, strong and light. It also accommodates needed accessories.
Using an intermediate gas system on the button rifled 16-inch barrel makes for soft shooting. Chrome lined and made from CMV steel keeps the rifle accurate and long lasting.
Barrett’s flash hider mitigates flash and directs blast. The bolt carrier is DLC-coated, keeping the direct impingement gas system clean running under any condition.
A mil-spec buffer tube houses a hydraulic buffer and holds a Magpul MOE SL stock.
Available in Black, Flat Dark Earth, or Tungsten Grey, the rifle ships in a Barrett-branded soft case with one Magpul 20-round magazine and Magpul UIS sights installed.
MSRP for the REC10 Carbine is $2,750.
On the Range
Running the REC10 at the Athlon Outdoors Rendezvous, it was accurate with Barrett’s proven reliability. Incredibly light, it points well and allowed for hits on steel at 100 yards and further using the iron sights.

Brass ejects with authority in the proper direction. Fit and finish were excellent with great attention to detail throughout. It balanced well in the hands, pointed quickly and shouldered easily.
Available chambering includes .308, 6.5 Creedmoor and .260 Remington, which means the REC10 has all of the most popular cartridges covered.
Along with the standard version, a LR version will be offered using a 20-inch stainless steel match barrel with a PRSIII stock and Geissele SSA trigger.
If you are in the market for a premium rifle from a proven builder, you’ll want to hold out for the Barrett REC10.
