The United States is home to some of the best shooting ranges in the world, many of which are incredible places to shoot long-range distances. Many of these same ranges host the Precision Rifle Series, National Rifle Series, Extreme Long Range, King of Two Mile, Team Sniper Matches, and other long-range shooting competitions. I have been extremely fortunate to travel to ranges nationwide and get first-hand experience shooting at some of these long-range places. I have competed from coast to coast in competitions stretching from 600 yards to over 1,000. And to think, I haven’t even scratched the surface of long-range shooting.
Super 6: Best Long-Range Shooting Ranges for Racing!
Last year, I competed as an amateur in the Precision Rifle Series competitions. I was humbled by different environments, temperature swings, berm wind traps, moving targets set out to 500 yards, and more challenges I had never faced before. And you know what? I absolutely loved it. These ranges I got to compete at are some of the best ranges in the country, not just for long range, but because of how their facilities are run, the other matches they hold, and the people who work there. If you ever get a chance to visit, plink around at, or compete at any of these ranges, don’t miss out on taking the opportunity to do so.
ALTUS Shooting Solutions
I might be slightly biased about this range because it was the first place I ever shot past 1,000 yards, but I can attest to its quality. The ALTUS range enables the use of over a dozen different ranges simultaneously, which is one of the reasons major long-range-style competitions can be run at this facility.
ALTUS has hosted the Accuracy International Long Range Classic competition for years and just hosted the 2024 event in April. ALTUS also has hosted the Kestrel Fall Classic, a Precision Rifle Series competition. This range stays busy year-round, hosting all sorts of shooting sports competitions, but it’s also known for hosting its own series of long-range competitions: the ALTUS Long Range Challenge Series presented by PROOF Research. Competitors shoot anywhere from 100-1000 yards at steel, reactive, and moving targets. ALTUS also hosts a Rimfire Challenge Series and a 2-Gun Challenge Series, with extremely challenging stages and targets for rimfire and small rifle-caliber guns.
Prop- & Target-Littered Ranges
This range has props and steel targets as far as the eye can see. After that, you need to be behind glass to see what they have downrange. To start, I made my first long-range shot off the Seekins Tower, a unique shooting platform built on the range. Shooting from an elevated platform is not the same as shooting on a flat range and requires some additional ballistic calculations to make impacts. Not many ranges outside of specific long-range ranges have moving targets. The movers at ALTUS are used frequently and are some of the most fun targets to try and impact.
You name the prop; ALTUS probably has it set up. Everyone who has shot at this range is familiar with the large boulder rocks stacked on top of one another for a unique shooting experience. ALTUS has a fun, short school bus, a long bus, tank traps, a chained moving platform, elevated platforms, vehicles galore, a shoot house, and I’m sure new props I haven’t seen since my last visit. The target distances are labeled on each berm, and there are various target sizes at each one.

CCC Shooting Complex, Home of TX Precision Matches
This range housed the match the sport of long-range shooting first smashed me with. While Texas is home to many long-range shooting facilities, this place treats people like they’re family. The CCC Shooting Complex is an 800-acre shooting club with pistol bays, multi-purpose bays, a 500-yard rifle range, and a 1,000+yard range. It hosts shooting sports matches, from USPSA to Precision Rifle to Rimfire Challenge competitions, Steel Challenge, and more.
I recommend shooting the TX Precision Matches hosted at this range if you’re anywhere near it or willing to travel to visit. The vision of these matches is to grow the sport of precision rifle shooting in a safe and professional environment, and the mission is to challenge the pro and the new shooter alike. Many ranges and groups will say this but not actually try to make a difference. The TX Precision Matches has the support of major manufacturers such as JP Rifles, Impact Precision, Proof Research, WieBad Shooting Gear, Thunderbeast Arms, Leupold, Vortex Optics, Triggertech, Federal Ammunition, Hornady, Foundation Stocks, event Planet Ford, and more. The range even keeps “loaner” rifles on-hand to help interested shooters compete in their first match. That’s it; excuses have evaporated. Now, it’s up to you to show up.
Shooter-Friendly Matches
The TX Precision Matches are friendly to the new shooter. I experienced 120-second par-timed stages instead of the 90-second stages at other matches. The courses of fire were simple in terms of instruction but still not easy to execute. The sport of PRS quickly humbled me here, with targets stationed in water, hiding errant target impacts.
Despite the challenge of spotting the misses, the props at this range were some of my favorites. I shot off a helicopter, on a rooftop, off a metal barricade with different-sized ports, on corrugated and concrete pipes, various tank traps, and more. If you truly want to test your long-range shooting skills and see if you are a master of wind, this is the place to go.

Twisted Barrel Precision
Twisted Barrel Precision is a newer range to the long-range scene but worth checking out. This facility sits on more than 250 acres, with ranges stretching out more than a mile. There is a pro shop on the property, and memberships are available. I attended the Twisted Barrel Precision Scorcher match in 2023 after TX Precision and faced a new set of challenges.
Arkansas in the summer was significantly hotter than Texas in April, hence the match’s name “Scorcher.” This is a range you will learn about mirage and how to navigate impacting targets through it. There were new props I had never seen, such as a concrete pipe with ladder rungs built into the sides where you had to shoot weak hand/weak shoulder to make a shot on target. This range is clean and stunning, with labeled berms, know-your-limits (KYL) plate racks, trueing bars (rectangular targets to verify your data), and many of the same props I had seen at other ranges. I also got to shoot off the hood of a truck for one stage, which was a highlight for me.
Twisted Barrel Precision is hosting the Precision Rifle Expo in September of this year, along with the “Money Maker” match to coincide with the event. This range hosts PRS regional matches, the 2024 Scorcher PRO PRS Series Event, with more events, I’m sure, coming soon.

Gunline Shooting
The Gunline Shooting Range sits on 105 acres with an on-site pro shop. It consists of seven shooting lanes, from 30 to 1,000 yards. This is a membership-only range but hosts some big PRS matches, which is how I learned about this range. I competed in the Magnolia Meltdown PRS Pro Series match last year at Gunline. They host it again in August this year. Gunline also hosts PRS one-day regional series matches with varying dates throughout the year. And finally, they host PRS Rimfire Series matches as well, which are also one-day events.
Gunline invested in many KYL racks featuring squares, circles, diamonds, and humanoid targets. These made for great fun when arguing shapes with fellow squadmates on a stage. They also have animal-shaped steel targets that are much more challenging to impact as you can easily miss a shot over the back, between the legs, or under the neck, for example. And finally, they have moving targets, which were an absolute blast to try and impact.
My best stages from the Magnolia Meltdown competition were the stages with moving targets. It seems my 3-Gun shooting career paid off slightly in my long-range shooting career. The Gunline “G” barricade comprises a one-of-a-kind prop made specifically with the Gunline logo, and it was challenging to set up a stable shooting position. I shot out of the back of a school bus, off a truck, off an angled rooftop, rocks, and ladder rungs I never want to see again in my life.

K&M Precision Rifle Training Shooting Complex
If you spend time in the long-range shooting world, you know about K&M Precision. I would call this the mecca of long-range shooting ranges in the U.S. This is a member-only shooting facility, but they also host top-notch training classes and some of the country’s biggest Precision Rifle Series matches. I went to two PRS matches last year at this range. One was an Armageddon Gear Cup Series match that is part of the PRS series and by far the hardest match for a newer shooter to sign up for (unless you know your long-range stuff). The other match was the total opposite and designed for newer long-range competition shooters, the GAP Grind PRO/AM PRS match.
This range stays busy and booked out to bring you some of the best long-range training in the country. K&M instructs more precision rifle shooters than any other non-government entity nationwide. Their instructors practice what they teach, compete as often as possible, and earn rankings higher nationally than any other training agency. Three of K&M’s instructors won one or more national-level PRS competitions, consistently ranked among the top in the nation.
Multiple Ranges
Like ALTUS, K&M has over a dozen different ranges that can be run simultaneously, which is how they can host such large training and competitions. This range will test your ability to call your shots, see your misses, make corrections, and watch for different wind directions, especially around wooded areas. K&M has massive mockup shoot houses, four towers, and 10, 270-degree pistol and carbine bays with automated mover systems. They have a bay dedicated to training your ability to hit moving targets, with automated mover systems set at 150, 300, and 500 yards. The longest range is 1,200 yards and is a known distance range.
In addition to the range, K&M has guest lodges you can book to stay in for training classes. They have an executive clubhouse, gym, automated classroom, a full-service pro shop, RV hookups, and the largest and nicest pavilion I’ve ever seen on a range in my 10 years in this industry. It is 8,700 square feet, has audio and visual automation, tables, benches, a dedicated “prize table” area, and can host hundreds of people.

Clinton House Plantation
I visit Clinton House Plantation almost once a month, it feels like. I have shot AK Matches, 3-Gun competitions, and Falling Steel charity matches, attended The Gathering annually here, and I’ll be there for CanCon East this fall. Some days, it feels like I live on this range, and I don’t take that for granted. I’ve shot a mile at Clinton House with Barrett Firearms, earning a challenge coin from them. I’ve stretched my .223 Wylde barrel out to 600+ yards on the clock, and I’ve even impacted a 200-yard 3 mph mover with a 9mm PSA PCC during AK Masters 2023.
The latest upgrades made at this facility are all dedicated to improving the long-range shooting area. They’ve built barricades, walls, tank traps, and pipes, moved the school bus to shoot out of, and have newly painted Connex containers stacked high to shoot out of windows, off rooftops, and more. Clinton House makes this list because of how challenging some targets are to shoot, depending on their placement. The open, natural terrain of Clinton House creates crazy wind traps and switches in wind direction movement. A target set up at the same yardage 45 degrees to the left will have the opposite wind call 120 degrees to the right. There are significant elevation differences with targets placed high up on hills or down near water, or you can find yourself shooting up at targets or down from many of their elevated shooting platforms.
I highly recommend signing up for one of their monthly matches or a major match hosted at this facility. You’ll be challenged no matter your skill level. If you attend a public event hosted at Clinton House, you just might be able to earn your mile-shot challenge coin.
