Producing a knife blade by using more than one type of steel isn’t anything new. Damascus steel is essentially a composite of several different steels welded together through a process of heat and pressure. Certainly, the technique in its many variations for producing this type of steel has been around for several centuries.

The folks at Kershaw, however, are taking a new approach to composite blade construction. By combining two different types of steel, one for the spine and another for the edge, Kershaw has produced a new and unique generation of composite blades. The process they are using to accomplish this has been termed “braze welding.” Since this is an entirely new process, they are at the “patent pending” stage of development.
