The K-9 unit of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office are now wearing protective vests. According to Binghamton Homepage, the Broome County Sheriff’s Office received them from a Massachusetts-based non-profit called Vested Interest in K-9s, which is an organization dedicated to providing bullet and stab protective vests to law enforcement K-9s across the country.
These police dogs, named Ruger, Mac and Aevar, have already begun adjusting to wearing the vests, which are bullet and stab-proof. Deputy Leon Brown of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office touted the importance of K-9s.
“They’re considered deputy sheriff’s in this department. They are our partners. They are out on the calls with us. They keep us safe and we’ve bonded with them. We love our dogs and we want to keep them protected,” said Brown.
According to Binghamton Homepage, Vested Interested has provided more than 900 police dog vests over a five-year period.
