Building the Perfect Custom Home-Defense AR

For the 2015 issue of BLACK GUNS, contributor Mike Detty chronicled his efforts to build a custom home-defense AR rifle from pieces left over from other, similar gun builds. The result was an ergonomic, lightweight rifle capable of dealing precision groups at 100 yards and beyond.

“For the foundation of my new house gun, I decided to use a stripped Patriot Ordnance Factory (POF) P415 Gen I lower receiver. Machined from a solid billet of 7075-T6 aluminum, the lower features a large, flared magazine well and distinctive white and red safe/fire designations,” says Detty.

For the trigger group, Detty used Tac-Con’s 3MR trigger group. “Designed to simulate full-auto fire without the expense and paperwork of a Class III gun, the unit is ATF approved and requires no special fitting. It even uses a selector that goes into the third position, which would be burst or full-auto on an M16 or M4, to add that forbidden pleasure for the weapon-indulgent crowd,” says Detty. “The third mode has a very positive and short reset that dramatically reduces the time between shots.”

In choosing a barrel, Detty decided on a DPMS offering he had recently tried through its inclusion on the DPMS Oracle AR. “I’ve been a big fan of DPMS’ Oracle rifle. In my estimation, you cannot find a better deal in the AR world than this gun. It features a flattop receiver and gas block as well as a collapsible stock. But what makes it so light and handy is its light-profile barrel,” says Detty. “Believe it or not, every one of these rifles I’ve tested is capable of 1-MOA accuracy or better. I like my house guns to be as light as possible and fast handling, and for this reason I decided to use the one and only DPMS stainless, light-profile barrel I had.”
