SIG Sauer racked up another major win with the recent announcement the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) switched to the P320 platform. Officially designated the C22, SIG initially delivered 7,000 pistols, with soldiers now fielding the C22.
Canadian Armed Forces Adopt SIG P320
The C22 replaces the Browning 9mm, adopted by Canadian forces back in 1944. The new platform brings a much more modern, modular platform for operating in today’s tactical environments.
“The selection process for the C22 was extremely competitive with safety, reliability, and accuracy at the forefront – the P320 delivers on all fronts and ensures operational readiness and effectiveness for the Canadian Armed Forces,” said Tom Jankiewicz, Executive Vice President, Law Enforcement Sales, SIG SAUER, Inc. “For the first time in nearly eighty years our northern allies will field a modern, reliable pistol to support and carry out their mission.”
The C22 comprises a a full-size P320-based, 9mm striker-fired pistol. The C22 contract pistol brings several enhancements, including an improved ergonomic design. A 17-round capacity and loaded chamber indicator give operators more positive recognition of ammo status during a fight. Additionally, the C22 features the SIG Sauer P320 three-point takedown safety for pistol disassembly. It does not require a trigger pull for disassembly. A five-point safety system makes it the safest, most dependable pistol platform, according to SIG Sauer.
“SIG SAUER is honored that the P320 is the official sidearm of the Canadian Armed Forces, and proud of the positive feedback we are receiving throughout their transition to the P320,” concluded Jankiewicz.

Editor’s Note:
We’ll file this one under “It’s about time.” Nothing against the handy little Browning’s of yesteryear, it was high time to get with a modern pistol for our neighbors to the north. The Canadian Armed Forces selection of the SIG P320 platform just reaffirms what America’s military and law enforcement are proving everyday–the P20 platform is leading the pack right now in terms of selection and adoption processes.
The modular, striker-fired unit blends features and characteristics demanded by today’s warfighters and law enforcement. Additionally, an entire aftermarket industry stands ready to fully equip the P320 and its clones. This trend won’t subside anytime soon.
