Carjacking Suspect Shot By 71-Year-Old Man In South Dakota

A carjacking suspect got way more than he bargained for when he tried to steal a car from a senior citizen in Sioux Falls, South Dakota last week.

KELO reports that the incident began with a 71-year-old Oklahoma man and his wife sitting in their car in the Red Rock Inn parking lot. Sioux Falls Police Officer Sam Clemens described what happened next.

“The driver’s door was cracked slightly. While they were in there, what ends up being our suspect came along and pulled open the door and started punching the man in the head. Telling him to get out. He was trying to take the car,” Clemens said.

Unfortunately for this bad guy, the elderly man he was assaulting happened to be carrying a concealed handgun in his pocket. The man drew his .38 caliber handgn and opened fire, shooting the suspect twice.

The suspect, later identified as 34-year-old Edward Leblanc, fled the scene and was later found by police near a local McDonald’s. He was transported to an area hospital and has charges of robbery and assault to look forward to once he gets out.

KELO says the armed 71-year-old man escaped with minor scrapes and bruises.

“In this case it certainly worked out well for the victim. He was able to defend himself and his property. He wasn’t trying to chase after the guy or do anything other than just try to stop that beating from happening,” said Clemens.

Luckily the concealed carrier won’t face any charges as a result of using his firearm, thanks to the reciprocal agreement between Oklahoma and South Dakota.
