Chiappa Triple Threat: A Triple Barrel Shotgun for Home Defense?

Last year after SHOT Show 2019, we gave you a first look at the Charles Daly Honcho triple-barrel firearm. With anything triple barrel, there’s always a bit of hype. But at just 27.75 inches, the Honcho was pretty damn cool. We thought about it again at SHOT Show 2020 and decided to stop by the Charles Daly booth. There was one firearm we wanted to take a look at it: the Charles Daly / Chiappa Triple Threat shotgun.

Chiappa Triple Threat Details

Before we get to the Triple Threat itself, there might be a little confusion over the usage of Chiappa and Charles Daly. The latter builds the Triple Threat while the former distributes the shotgun. To avoid confusion, we’re just going to refer to it as the Chiappa Triple Threat moving forward.

The Triple Threat wasn’t anything new for SHOT Show 2020, we just realized we hadn’t really taken a close look at it. It’s part of the Chiappa “Triple” series, joining the Triple Magnum and the Triple Crown. What are the differences? Essentially, it basically comes down to size, which dictates usage. With an 18.5-inch barrel and an overall length of 35.5 inches, the Triple Threat is more of a home-defense shotgun. Meanwhile, the Triple Magnum and Triple Crown are both geared toward hunting. Both feature barrel lengths between 26 and 28 inches, with overall lengths between 41 and 45 inches.

It’s certainly an interesting home-defense option, to say the least. Break opens are necessarily ideal in that situation, but with three shots available, the Triple Threat changes the game a little.
