Combat Handguns Nov/Dec 2022: You Might Be a Terrorist If…
If there has ever been a time in our country’s history when honest, lawful citizens who respect a critical constitutional right have been under severe fire from nearly all sides it is now. I’m talking about the Second Amendment and the widespread hatred for those who believe in it.
An excellent example of such demonization is a leaked internal FBI document that was recently publicized by Project Veritas. The guide claims to help investigators determine who might be a “Militia Violent Extremist” (MVE). If you are like me, it probably lands you squarely on the suspected terrorist list.
How so, you ask? How about something as seemingly innocuous as quoting Thomas Jefferson? According to the “Common Phrases and References” section of the guideline, MVEs are likely to say such horrid things as, “When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty,” or “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”
Yes, Jefferson would be considered a suspected domestic terrorist by the FBI. And that’s not all. The guideline document also considers people “potential” MVEs if they do or say any of the following: have a Gadsden flag, display any Revolutionary War imagery, say things like “Molon labe” (Come and Take Them), mention the deadly debacles at Ruby Ridge or Waco, consider Vicki Weaver a martyr or even make reference to the Second Amendment.
Laws Targeting Law Abiding Gun Owners
Of course, it’s not just the FBI that considers you and me to be the “bad guys.”
States like California and New York continue to pass restrictive laws that target law-abiding gun owners and ignore violent criminals.
Despite the critical ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, which declared New York’s “good cause” requirement for carry permits to be unconstitutional, the state has a fairly new law requiring applicants for such permits to hand over their social media accounts for review of their “character and conduct.”
If these “Facebook investigators” can find anything they consider bad about you, they’ll gladly deprive you of your rights.
Meanwhile, California AB2571(Firearms: advertising to minors) was recently approved by the governor. The law infringes on both the First and Second Amendment rights of gun owners and gun makers. It essentially bans advertising of firearms that the gun-ban monitors in California government believe could appeal to teenagers under the age of 18.
Federal Government Declares Us Deplorable
Even many in Congress consider us to be deplorable human beings who don’t care about the men, women and children murdered on a daily basis by violent criminals. During the recent debate over the so-called “assault weapons” ban, bill author and Democrat Rep. David Cicilline said of those who don’t support his ban: “Imagine if we clung to the desire to protect our children and our communities as tightly as some of my colleagues cling to their rifles.”
With so many people considering lawful gun owners to be “the enemy,” it’s little wonder we have huge concerns about so-called “red-flag” laws. After all, with so many people despising us, the chance of us being turned in to the red-flag authorities for our beliefs by some gun-hating do-gooder grows every day.
We as law-abiding gun owners should take heart in the knowledge that we are on the right side of history.
As U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas wrote in the Bruen opinion: “The constitutional right to bear arms in public for self-defense is not ‘a second-class right, subject to an entirely different body of rules than the other Bill of Rights guarantees.’ We know of no other constitutional right that an individual may exercise only after demonstrating to government officers some special need.”
In the end, we can’t let the pressure from gun-banners and rogue government agencies curb our interest in—yes, I’m going to say it, Mr. FBI investigator—protecting the Second Amendment. Future generations are counting on us to keep their freedom intact, and we can’t let them down. —Mark Chesnut
