Combat Handguns Sept/Oct 2023: Keep and Bear Gun History

Philosopher George Santayana once said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” It’s catchy. And so is Churchill’s statement, “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Indeed. The Sept/Oct issue of Combat Handguns addresses the history of gun rights and much more, as detailed below.

That gets me thinking about how statist politicians, along with their state-run media, law firms and big-tech partners in crime, are actively trying to strip away our 2A rights. Their goal is to take us legally armed citizens back to 1774.

A time when the Crown’s Redcoats were conducting warrantless searches and seizures in patriots’ homes. And in the process, confiscating arms and ammo by the directive of King George III.

We all know what happened next. Need historical proof of what happens when tyrants disarm the people and those people ignored history, costing millions their lives? Look up Mao Tse-tung, Adolf Hitler, Fidel Castro, Vladimir Lenin, Uganda’s Idi Amin, Cambodia and present-day Venezuela.

So yeah, history repeats itself. Maybe not in the same way. But as long as we have a decent understanding of what worked and what didn’t, we’ll be able to handle present-day decisions, projects and dilemmas with aplomb by utilizing valuable hindsight.

Why all this history jibber jabber? I thought you’d never ask! This issue—in fact every issue—of Combat Handguns is in some way built around historical firearms, 2A rights and self-defense-related content whether you realize it or not.

What’s Inside?

The historic bent is obvious in long-time contributor Dennis Adler’s two pieces—“150 Years Of Peacemaker” and “P99 Swan Song.”

After 28 years of production and end-user feedback, Walther took that historical intel and created its “Final Edition,” which likely will be passed down for generations to come.

Speaking of learning from history/building a better mousetrap, check out the Vudoo Gun Works magic that’s been done to firearms icon John M. Browning’s 1911 platform. Plus, there is years’ worth of “in the good fight” experience to be gleaned. Specifically, from Joshua Hood’s “Training Myths Busted” and “Daily Gun Toting.”

Vudoo re-engineers the 1911.

As usual, Massad Ayoob’s “Self-Defense & The Law” column always consults historic landmark cases. They could ultimately teach you how to stay alive and/or out of jail for the rest of your life.

On the “Loose Rounds” back page, editor Mark Chesnut lays out current events related to 2A rights. The following “good news” tidbit related to the unconstitutional ATF Pistol Brace rule came in right at press time.

On May 24, the Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) released a statement on the Fifth Circuit’s order granting an Injunction pending appeal in Mock v. Garland. FPC’s and FPC Action Foundation’s federal lawsuit challenges the ATF’s recent rule reclassifying braced pistols as NFA-regulated short-barreled rifles (SBRs).

The rule FPC rightfully challenged would transform millions of peaceable people into felons overnight. This is simply for owning a firearm that had been lawful to own for a decade. That is unless they either destroy their constitutionally protected property or comply with the NFA’s onerous and unconstitutional requirements.
