When we think of the Old West, images of quick-draw gunfights come to mind. Hollywood has helped this perception with scenes of quick-draw street duels. The truth is that duels like that were rare, but speed still mattered. Today, the Cowboy Fast Draw Association keeps that “need for speed” idea alive.
Cowboy Fast Draw Association – The Need for Speed
The Cowboy Fast Draw Association (CFDA) is a unique organization. It combines history, sport, and camaraderie to celebrate the iconic American cowboy and the Old West. Dedicated to preserving Western traditions, the CFDA brings to life the excitement and skill of cowboy-style fast-draw shooting. It allows enthusiasts to connect with a bygone era while fostering community and friendly competition.
As I mentioned, fast draw shooting is a practice steeped in the lore of the American West. It was inspired by legendary figures such as Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hickok, and Doc Holliday. These larger-than-life personalities have fueled a fascination with the art of drawing a pistol at lightning speed with lethal accuracy. The CFDA keeps this legacy alive by promoting the sport of fast draw in a safe, family-friendly environment. Participants replicate the quick-draw techniques of 19th-century gunslingers using single-action revolvers and wax bullet ammunition. Unlike Hollywood depictions, the CFDA emphasizes sportsmanship, historical authenticity, and safety.
Fast Draw Competitions
The goal at these events is pretty obvious. You want to draw and fire your revolver at a target in the shortest time possible. The targets, typically set at distances of 15 to 21 feet, are equipped with sensors that measure the time it takes for a shooter to hit the mark. Matches are conducted in a double-elimination format, ensuring everyone gets multiple opportunities to participate and improve. Shooter categories are divided by age, gender, and skill level, making the sport accessible to many participants. The CFDA welcomes anyone interested in this high-speed sport, from juniors to seniors. While the goal is speed, the CFDA is safety-focused. It places modern safety measures at the center of all competitions.
Off the Shelf Guns with Wax Bullets
Participants use six guns loaded with wax bullets and shotgun primers. All guns are chambered in .45 Long Colt for consistency. One of the founding principles of the Cowboy Fast Draw Association is to keep their Six Guns faithful reproductions of six guns that existed in the old West. The goal is for members to go to their local gun shop and purchase a firearm from the display case. Guns must be .45 Long Colt single-action revolvers with nonadjustable rear sights. The minimum barrel length is 4 ½ inches when measuring from the cylinder to the end of the barrel. Front sights are optional. The Colt Single Action Army or faithful reproductions such as those that come from Pietta and Uberti are the most commonly seen in competitions. You can find many more suggestions on the CFDA website.
The goal is to create an enjoyable competitive environment. Members adopt “alias” personas with Western-style outfits, adding a playful and immersive element to the experience. These aliases often reflect the shooter’s personality or interests. The CFDA hosts numerous local, regional, and national competitions throughout the year, culminating in the annual Fast Draw World Championship. These events unite participants worldwide, fostering friendships and a shared appreciation for Western heritage. In addition to competitive shooting, the CFDA is dedicated to preserving and promoting the history and traditions of the Old West. Members often participate in educational programs, community events, and historical reenactments, sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm for cowboy culture with audiences of all ages.
