Dick’s Sporting Goods Statement
“We are in the process of destroying all firearms and accessories that are no longer for sale as a result of our February 28th policy change,” a spokeswoman told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “We are destroying the firearms in accordance with federal guidelines and regulations.”
The spokeswoman added that the rifles would be destroyed at the company’s distribution centers. The parts are being sent to a salvage company for recycling. The company didn’t say exactly how many rifles and accessories are getting dismantled.
Revised Policies
Two weeks after the Parkland school shooting, Dick’s Sporting Goods said it would stop selling “assault-style” rifles completely. The Pennsylvania-based company had previously removed MSRs from all Dick’s stores after the Sandy Hook shooting, but it said it would also take the step of removing them from all 35 of its Field & Stream locations.
In addition, Dick’s Sporting Goods announced it would no longer sell firearms and ammunition to anybody under 21. Furthermore, “high-capacity” magazines are also getting pulled from the store’s shelves. In its statement, the company added that it “never had and never would” sell bump stocks.
Dick’s is currently dealing with two different lawsuits over its new age policy for gun sales.
Walmart, Kroger and L.L. Bean have also revised their gun policies; all three followed Dick’s Sporting Goods’ lead and confirmed they would no longer sell guns & ammo to anybody under 21.
