An escaped prisoner is back in police custody after he tried to carjack a citizen who happened to be carrying a concealed handgun.

According to the Hattiesburg American, it all started last Saturday when 37-year-old Eugene Robinson escaped from the George County Regional Correctional Facility in Lucedale, Miss. by overpowering the officer he was with, tying him up and driving off in his champagne-colored 2000 GMC Sonoma truck.

WLOX reports that Robinson had trustee status at the prison, which gave him access to areas outside the gates.

After a couple of days on the lam, Robinson either decided to switch vehicles or the truck he was driving presumably broke down, because he then attempted to carjack somebody at North Lake Circle and Highway 9 near Eupora, Miss. The driver complied with Robinson’s demands, but he proceeded to pull out a handgun and open fire as Robinson drove away.

Robinson was shot at least once, and he was later located by law enforcement in the nearby town of Mathiston. He was taken to a hospital in Starkville for treatment, and then transported to the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Rankin County. He is currently in stable condition.

Escaped Prisoner Background

The Clarion Ledger reports that Robinson has been in prison since 2003 and was doing 30 years for armed robbery and burglary. He now has an escape charge to look forward to, in addition to the possibility of other charges, police said.

The would-be carjacking victim who saved the day by shooting at Robinson is confirmed to be a concealed carry permit holder.
