Exclusive Video: Smith & Wesson’s Duty-Ready 5.56mm M&P15T

Smith & Wesson offers a number of AR-style rifles as part of its Military & Police (M&P) series, which has been helping law enforcement officers for decades by serving them with ultra-reliable weapons.

I recently got my hands on the M&P15T in 5.56mm NATO. With the “T” standing for “tactical,” it doesn’t take a genius to understand what the engineers at S&W were aiming for.

This rifle is equipped with everything a shooter or patrol cop would need to put it to work immediately. Plus, it is easily upgradable and can accept additional accessories depending on the owner’s needs.

Smith & Wesson used a 16-inch barrel made of 4140 steel for the M&P15T. The barrel has a Melonite finish for corrosion resistance. It also has 5R rifling with a 1-in-8-inch twist rate.

Magpul MBUS flip-up sights are standard equipment on the gun. These fast-targeting sights, including the dual aperture rear unit, are able to keep rounds on target yet fold out of the way if you decide to add a red dot or glass. Likewise, Magpul provides a 30-round Gen 2 PMAG for the rifle.

A free-floated, 10-inch, quad-rail handguard is another piece of standard kit on the gun. This allows you to add a white light, a laser or vertical grip quickly and easily. A six-position-collapsible buttstock allows the shooter to adjust the length to fit his or her needs.
