On November 5th, 2021 an argument over visitation rights, in Lubbock, Texas, meets a lethal end. The argument between Chad Read and Kyle Carruth ended in a fatal shooting, over what appears to be a visitation dispute. Chad Read’s current wife, Jennifer Read, captured the event on video.
Argument Between Chad Read and Kyle Carruth Ends in Fatal Shooting
The shooting took place on Friday, just before 4:30 p.m. following an argument between Chad Read, his ex-wife and her new boyfriend, Kyle Carruth. The video shows Chad and his ex-wife, Christina, arguing about visitation rights. In it, Carruth tells Read to get off his property, before going inside the home. A report from High Plains Public Radio states that the property is associated with Carruth’s parents.
According to a report from LubbockOnline.com, “During the argument, Christina could be heard saying the child was not home and that she was going to fetch him. She also said that she didn’t abide by the court ordered deadline because she wanted to see their son.”
“I don’t care if you wanted to see him or not,” Chad Read said. “I get him at 3:15 p.m. If you want to see him, you see him up until 3:15. You keep trying to keep my son from me.”
During the argument Chad threatens to subpoena multiple people, including the ex-wife of Kyle Carruth, Judge Anne-Marie Carruth. It was at this point that Carruth retuned with a rifle, and the two become physical, chest bumping each other. Read then challenges Carruth to use the rifle.
You can hear Read saying, “Do it. You better ******* use it ************. Because I’ll take it from you and use it. Got it? Where’s my son?”
As Jennifer Read continues filming, Read and Carruth continue arguing and Carruth fires a shot on the ground at Read’s feet. This prompts Read to grab the firearm and use it to throw Carruth away from him. As he spins, Carruth regains his footing and shoots once at Read, who then appears in the video laying face down on the porch.
The Aftermath
As the video pans to a lifeless Read, his current wife Jennifer tells someone to call 911. She then notifies Carruth that she has the entire incident on video. She tells Carruth, “You did it, not him.”
Kyle responds, telling her “I told all of y’all to leave.”
“None of you all should be here. I asked you to leave. I did everything … I did not want to do any of this.”
When the officers arrived, they pronounced Chad Read dead at the scene.
Although there are no charges yet, the Lubbock Police Department issued a statement to KCBD 11 that the investigation is ongoing.
“Lubbock Police Officers were called to the 2100 block of 90th Street on Friday, November 5th at 4:20 p.m. for reports of shots fired.
“Upon arrival, officers found 54-year-old Chad Read deceased on the scene.
“Through the initial course of the investigation, it appears there was a verbal altercation between Read and another male related to a domestic incident that turned physical. Shortly after, shots were fired.
“No arrests have been made and the investigation is on-going.”
According to High Plains Public Radio, “In an interview with Texas Tech Public Media Wednesday afternoon, Kyle Carruth’s attorney David Guinn stated he had not seen the now-public video and said his client was acting in self-defense.”
Lubbock police officials turned over their files on the investigation and the Texas Attorney General’s Office is reviewing the shooting. However, there are still no charges at this time.
