A female clerk fought back against two suspects during an attempted armed robbery at a tobacco store in Lexington, Kentucky, shooting one suspect in the shoulder and sending another running for his life.
According to WTVQ, 21-year-old Zara Adil was working the register at Discount Tobacco Zone on Friday night when two masked men walked in. After pacing around the store suspiciously, one of the men pulled out a gun, approached the counter and demanded cash. Adil complied, opening up the register.
That’s when the armed suspect made a huge mistake. He put the gun down in order to collect the money.
Adil saw an opportunity and quickly took advantage.
“I picked up the gun and pointed it at the second guy and said you run or I will shoot you,” Adil said.
As WTVQ reports, the second man quickly fled the scene, while the first man attacked Adil in an attempt to get the gun back and gain control of the situation. During the struggle, Adil opened fire and shot the man in the shoulder.
The two continued fighting, but the suspect eventually left the store without stealing any money.
Police in Lexington say this attempted armed robbery is connected to a string of other recent robberies since the start of 2015.
Adil, who was uninjured during the incident, told WTVQ she was just trying to defend her store.
“If more people stand up, they won’t have that much courage to go around and do what they’re doing,” she said.
A warrant has been issued for Darnell Thomas, Jr. in connection with the investigation.
