Kym Rock knows all about fighting.

Aside being a seven-time World Karate Champion, Rock is also a cancer survivor. So it should come as no surprise that Rock is empowering other women to learn how to defend themselves and fight.

Rock founded the “Fight Like a Girl” program 17 years ago and hasn’t looked back. The program teaches unique techniques and skills developed by Rock “to teach women and girls to think smarter and get away from an attacker, abductor or abuser.”

“Women want to know how to take care of themselves, it’s built into you,” Rock told the Canon City Daily Record Thursday night. “Knowledge is what helps keep you safe.”

The purpose of Fight Like a Girl classes is to cater the lessons for anyone to be able to learn escape techniques. Rock said she developed the program with “simple” techniques so women can learn them easily. She said the program teaches women what they need to know up front.

Colorado-based women can take the “Fight Like a Girl” classes at Shorinkan Family Karate, located at 312 S. Ninth St., Suite 1, in Canon City. Class run four days a week — from 6:15 to 7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and 9 to 9:45 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
