FSU to Allow Guns in Vehicles at College Football Games

Florida State University (FSU) announced Wednesday it would allow football fans to bring guns to Doak Campbell Stadium, provided they have a concealed carry permit and keep their firearms locked in their vehicles. The decision was made just one day after a gun rights group filed a lawsuit against the university over a policy banning guns on campus.

According to Fox News, Florida Carry says gun owners — with or without a permit — should be allowed to lock their guns in their vehicle on campus regardless of whether they are there for a football game, class or visiting.

FSU still doesn’t allow guns on campus grounds, but in 2013, they began making an exception for CCW permit holders who keep their guns in their cars after Florida Carry won a lawsuit against the University of North Florida that, according to Politico, said universities and colleges can’t make policies which supersede a state law that lets people store guns in their vehicles.

Now, says Fox News, the school has — two years later — updated its online game day guide to reflect that 2013 decision.

“Florida law prohibits weapons and firearms on the Florida State University campus at all times, including football games, with the exception that individuals who hold valid concealed weapons permits are permitted to store a weapon or firearm securely encased within a vehicle parked on campus,” the university said in a statement. “FSU’s policy was modified two years ago to recognize this exception following a court case involving another university that clarified the issue.

“To the extent that Florida Carry objects to language on an FSU web site on football game day operations, that site was inadvertently not updated to reflect the 2013 policy change and has since been modified.”

Florida Carry intends to press on with the lawsuit in order to get the university to allow gun owners without permits to lock their guns in their vehicles.

The Florida State Seminoles have a home game against the University of South Florida this Saturday.
