The Sandstorm is the latest creation from the sound suppressor designers at Gemtech. Intended for precision sniper rifle systems in 7.62mm NATO, it is one of the lightest and smallest suppressors available for the sniper platform.
Built from titanium alloys, it sports fully welded construction, weighs 13.3 ounces, is 7.8 inches in length and 1.5 inches in diameter. The finish is a grey-brown non-reflective matte coating. Titanium has several properties that make it an excellent material for sound suppressors. It has a very high tensile strength, but is 45 percent lighter than steel. It is also a poor conductor of heat and highly resistant to corrosion, including acids and salt water, and has three times the abrasion resistance of steel, which is important for a part exposed to the high pressure and particles in a rifle’s muzzle blast. The downside is the metal is difficult to process and machine, which makes titanium items very expensive.
The Sandstorm will be available in a thread mount only. Quick disconnect-type mounts can be a nice feature in some applications but they also increase the size, weight and expense of the system.
