General Dynamics Wins US Navy Submarine Development Contract

Defense contractor General Dynamics has won two submarine development contract modifications totaling $35.8 million. The contract was awarded by the US Navy to GD subsidiary Electric Boat.

According to a press release, the first contract, valued at $19.8 million, stipulates that Electric Boat perform submarine research and development in support of technology areas such as manufacturability, maintainability, survivability, hydrodynamics, acoustics and materials. In addition, the company will conduct R&D in manning, hull integrity, performance, ship control, logistics, weapons handling and safety. The contract supports near-term Virginia-class technology insertion, future submarine concepts and core technologies.

The second contract, which is valued at $16 million, includes continued development of the Common Missile Compartment for the U.S. Ohio replacement submarine. General Dynamics will procure missile tube long-lead-time material and design and manufacture hardware.

GD’s five-year, $1.85 billion overall contract stipulates that Electric Boat perform R&D for the Navy’s next-generation ballistic-missile submarine, which will begin construction in 2021.
