The Gerber Assert: EDC Your Way with Full Customization

A name with over 80 years of knife-making behind it, Gerber offers its latest EDC folder with the Assert. Available in multiple colorways, the Assert can be purchased with stock colors or customized your way before you buy it. As a result, you get your knife your way—becoming an extension of your personality.

The Gerber Assert

Weighing a lightweight of 1.87 ounces, the Assert features a textured glass-filled nylon grip. The interior of the grip has a honeycomb structure to help achieve a light footprint and provide extra strength. Additionally, the ergonomic grip offers finger wells that work with the textured surface for enhanced retention.

Designed with EDC in mind, the S30V blade provides excellent corrosion resistance and edge retention. The 2.98-inch blade has a drop point profile and is held in lockup via the ambidextrous pivot lock. When open, the Assert measures an overall 9.95 inches.

Opening the Assert is achieved via an adjustable thumb stud running through the open fuller. This allows for one-handed opening using the thumb stud or the fuller, depending on your preference. When open, the flat grind provides a keen edge, ideal for typical EDC use.

The Assert is available in three stock colorways, black, green, or grey. However, if you like to make your knife your own, Gerber has an online configurator for the Assert. This allows you to choose any color combination (including all hardware, pocket clip, spacers, thumb stud, etc.) and blade finish. The available blade finishes are black oxide, stonewash, and satin, and you can even add a pattern from a list of available illustrations.

Utilizing a right- or left-hand tip-up deep pocket clip, the Assert can easily hide away in your pocket. Correspondingly, a rear lanyard hole accepts a lanyard for easy retrieval from the pocket.

“The Assert is an outstanding example of the quality and craftsmanship of the products being built right here in our Portland factory,” said Keith Carrato, Vice President/GM of Gerber Gear. “Designed to be compact, comfortable in hand, and most of all easy to use, it is the perfect pocketknife to carry on adventures this summer and beyond.”

Editor’s Note

I played around in the configurator, and there are a lot of options to choose from to customize your Assert. Choosing the colors for the various hardware gets right down to the minutia—including the backspacers and screws. When it comes to adding a pattern to your blade, there are a lot of illustrations to choose from. Not to mention the ability to upload a custom graphic for an upcharge.

It would be easy to spend a lot of time in the configurator just playing around and fine-tuning your knife. Once you are done, you can even add text, so you can personalize it with your name. That way, there will never be any confusion about whose knife it is. However, each blade customization does incur an upcharge. Although the base model is $175.00, the above custom model I created costs $250.00.

From initial observation, it looks like the Assert should be fairly easy to disassemble. If this is the case, it’s very likely that custom scales will be available through third parties at some point. This would add a whole other level of customization options to the model.
