FIRST LOOK: Glock’s Submissions for the Army Modular Handgun System

The saga of the U.S. Army’s XM17 Modular Handgun System has been long documented. Sig Sauer’s P320 won the contract against a field of impressive competitors. Glock protested the decision, which was rejected by the Government Accountability Office (GAO). Then a report from GAO surfaced that stated Sig’s proposal was more than $100 million cheaper than Glock’s, which aided in landing Sig the contract.

Still, Glock contends its submission should’ve been given more consideration by the U.S. Army when compared with the Sig P320.

“Glock, Inc. met or exceeded all of the mandated threshold requirements set forth in the RFP by the Army,” said Josh Dorsey, Glock’s VP of Operations, after the GAO decision.

But what exactly did Glock submit? Well, today we have exclusive photos of the company’s entries for the M17 and M18 pistol.

Included in the XM17 submissions were two variants, one of the 9mm Glock 19 and another of the .40 S&W G23.

Noticeable differences in the released photos compared to Glock’s standard offerings begin with the obvious Flat Dark Earth finish. On the heels of the FDE finish are a lack of finger grooves, a manual thumb safety and a lanyard ring at the bottom back end of the grip.

The Glock 17 was first considered during the last U.S. selection in 1985. Since then, many militaries and law enforcement agencies have adopted the handgun. The manufacturer has multiple variants in full and compact sizes with good parts compatibility and a well-established track record.
