GM Defense Makes First Infantry Squad Vehicle Deliveries to US Army

GM Defense announced its first deliveries of the radical new Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV) to the U.S. Army. GM Defense won a $214.3 million contract in June. The contract calls for 649 ISVs, while supporting the manufacture of up to 2,065 vehicles with additional authorization over eight years.

The ISV constitutes a light, agile all-terrain troop carrier. The design supports transporting a nine-soldier infantry squad, as well as equipment.

The vehicle derives from the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 midsize truck. It includes 90-percent commercial off-the-shelf parts. The 5,000-pound ISV will provide rapid ground mobility to soldiers. Lightweight, it can also ride in a UH-60 Blackhawk or fit inside a CH-47 Chinook.

“One hundred and twenty days from contract award to delivery is a significant milestone, and I am very proud of the team for this accomplishment,” said David Albritton, president of GM Defense. “We’re leveraging General Motors’ engineering prowess and immense manufacturing capabilities to bring transformative solutions to the military vehicle market. Our initial success with the ISV shows our commitment to our customer and highlights our unique right to win in the military mobility market.”

The ISV lacks armor and clearly fills a niche roll for the U.S. Army. The new Joint Light Tactical Vehicle replaces much of what the HUMVEE did for the Army. That’s not the ISV’s job. But what it lacks in protection, is should make up for in speed and agility.

There’s no official word yet whether or not GM Defense will offer the ISV—or, as least a variant—to the general public. But we sure hope so. On a ranch or as a hunting vehicle, or even in a weekend long 3-gun match, the ISV would be a cool addition to anyone’s garage. Off-road enthusiasts will no doubt geek out at the possibilities.
