Guns On School Grounds In Indiana

State lawmakers in Indianapolis, Indiana passed a controversial bill that will allow guns in school parking lots.

The bill passed overwhelmingly in both the Indiana House and Senate and now heads to Governor Mike Pence. If Governor Pence signs the bill, licensed owners could bring guns on school property if the guns are kept out of sight, and in a locked vehicle.

Firearms would not be allowed inside schools or at any school functions. The proposal came in the wake of the Sandy Hook shootings in December 2012, when 20 children and six teachers were killed in Connecticut.

Supporters say, if passed, this law would protects parents from committing a felony if they have a gun in their car when they drop off or pick up their kids at school. Some in opposition say guns don’t have a place at schools.

“I know there are a lot of people who feel like they have the right to carry their gun anywhere, I get that,” Dr. David Adams, Superintendent of Shelbyville Central Schools, told the Shelbyville News. “I just don’t think a school is a good place to keep and store those.”
