If you want it done right, do it yourself. That might be the unofficial motto driving every H-S Precision endeavor—not least of all the company’s Pro Long Range (PLR) rifle. In essence, the PLR is an ultra high-quality precision rifle designed for long-range sporting applications. But I quickly realized that its capabilities and powerful chambering could translate well over to tactical applications in rural locations where longer shots may be needed.
H-S Precision, based in Rapid City, South Dakota, utilizes “state-of-the-art computer design, CNC machines and computer-aided manufacturing techniques” to create its own stocks, actions, barrels, and bore and chamber reamers. H-S Precision also markets test barrels and pressure-gauging equipment to other members of the firearms industry. The U.S. Army and Marine Corps are two prominent H-S Precision clients. Both Remington and Savage Arms utilize H-S Precision products as well. I’m confident that a rifle manufactured by a company with such a résumé will perform as advertised. In fact, H-S Precision offers a 0.5-MOA guarantee for three shots at 100 yards for all of its .30-caliber and smaller chamberings as well as a 1-MOA guarantee for all larger calibers.

With the PLR, H-S Precision has put all of its high-quality individual components into one package. At its heart is the company’s Pro-Series 2000 action—the same action used in nearly all of its rifle models. The Pro-Series 2000 is comprised of a one-piece bolt body machined from heat-treated 4142 steel. The action body is machined from heat-treated 17-4PH stainless steel. One unique feature is the semi-cone bolt head with a claw extractor that is totally enclosed within the bolt head. The advantage of the totally enclosed case head, which Remington has made famous in terms of accuracy and strength, is combined with the best feature of the classic Mauser action—positive extraction of a case from the chamber. The safety is a
three-position type with a safety and a cocking indicator. The firing pin has a speed spring installed for a faster lock time. H-S Precision even
designs and manufacturers its own trigger, which is adjustable from 2.5 to 5 pounds.
