Some readers may remember Heckler & Koch’s renowned VP70 pistol, the first polymer-framed, striker-fired pistol, which was introduced in 1970, predating Glocks by 12 years. It’s been a long time coming, but HK has returned to this market with the new VP9, a 9mm, striker-fired, polymer-framed pistol ready for law enforcement officers and civilians alike.

The VP9 starts with a cold-hammer-forged, polygonal-rifled, 4.09-inch barrel with a 1-in-9.8-inch twist rate. Surrounding the barrel is a steel slide with front and rear serrations for easier manipulations. You’ll also notice two indexing tabs, “charging supports,” at the rear of the slide that catch a user’s hand for easier racking. On top of the slide are three-dot sights, and luminous versions are available.
A Picatinny rail is molded into the dust cover for attaching lights, lasers and other accessories. The VP9, with its 15-round magazine, also has an ambidextrous slide release and magazine release. The polymer grip frame is identical to the HK P30’s, with interchangeable backstraps and side grip plates, offering a total of 27 different grip configurations. The trigger has a 5.5-pound pull and a quick reset. As for safety features, users do not have to pull the trigger to take the pistol down, and the VP9 cannot be disassembled with a magazine inserted.
