Pistol packers in my age category generally envision an inside-the-waistband (IWB) holster as a rough-out, floppy leather pouch with a steel clip that’s supposed to keep it in place. For many years that was about all that was available, and I was never a user of this type of rig. That era fortunately is long past and today there are some really outstanding IWB holsters that do what they are supposed to do and are fairly comfortable.
Discreet Carry
One holster that recently came to my attention is from DSG Arms, a supplier of shooting gear that includes AR carbine parts and accessories, apparel, belts and holsters. The holster I’m referring to is the CDC (Compact Discreet Carry), an IWB holster that marks the newest addition to the company’s holster lineup.

Unlike the old-time IWB outfits, the CDC is made of rugged black Kydex, making it strong but very lightweight. It’s designed for low-profile all-day wear and the cant can be adjusted for behind-the-hip or appendix carry. The injection-molded ABS belt clip is mounted to the holster body with rubber washers and Phillips screws. It has a built-in sight channel, tension adjustment for weapon security and will fit on 1.5- or 1.75-inch belts. A raised tab on the inside of the holster body protects the wearer on this open-top/open-bottom design.
Field Test
I recently acquired a Glock 19 Gen4 pistol to use as my everyday-carry gun and obtained a DSG Arms CDC holster to fit it. I wore the holster to the range to try out my new Glock, placing it behind my right hip, inside my jeans, secured to a heavy-duty, 1.75-inch-wide leather belt.

The rig was comfortable, holding the pistol in place with little lateral or horizontal movement. The molded fit and tension setting I used kept the pistol secure. I had no difficulty making a fast presentation from this holster, and, due to its Kydex construction, the top of the holster stays open for smooth reholstering. Its light weight adds nothing to the user’s burden. I was very pleased with its performance and will be using it quite frequently.
Matches Made
Presently, the CDC holster is being made for the Glock 17, G19, G26, G42 and G43; Sig Sauer P320 Carry, P320 Subcompact and P229; Ruger LCP; and the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield and Bodyguard. For more information, visit dsgholsters.com.
