This is the fourth of five videos about author and former Navy SEAL Jack Carr. We put Carr on the cover of the brand-new Oct/Nov 2020 issue of Ballistic Magazine. Grab your copy at OutdoorGroupStore.com. Watch above as he talks about his 1988 FJ62 Toyota Land Cruiser and its significance.
Sitting down with best-selling author Jack Carr was an experience. We spoke about his new Hemingway typewriter, as well as some of the guns he used in “Savage Son”—his latest book. But when he pulled up for his interview, something else stood out to us: His ride.
Carr’s 1988 FJ62 Toyota Land Cruiser Build
Carr drives a 1988 Toyota Land Cruiser and it caught our eye for a number of reasons. We’re fans of Land Cruisers. Previously, we’ve covered Rodney Willis’ ADV80 — a custom 1992 FJ80 Toyota Land Cruiser. Carr’s FJ62 is certainly on that same level of awesomeness.
But then we thought back to Carr’s novels. We realized that the same Land Cruiser in front of us made appearances in his books. A rousing debate continues between protagonists James Reece and his friend Raife Hastings over Toyota Land Cruisers versus Land Rovers from their days in Mozambique. As a gesture of generosity to Reece, the Hastings/Thornton family have Reece’s 1988 FJ62 Toyota Land Cruiser restored and updated by ICON4X4 with a 376-cubic-inch, 430-horsepower General Motors LS3 V-8.
The final build is indeed what we see with Carr’s real-life Land Cruiser. ICON4X4 is, in fact, a real company. And the good people at ICON4X4 did quite a job on Carr’s actual build.
