An attempted break-in at a home in Topeka, Kansas ended with the would-be intruder being shot by the homeowner.
According to the Topeka Capital-Journal, the incident took place at around 4:35 a.m. Topeka police Sgt. Byron Endsley said a man living at 305 S.W. Clay heard a suspicious noise in his home and went downstairs to investigate after grabbing his home defense gun.
As the homeowner moved closer to the door, somebody from the outside threw a brick through a nearby window, hitting the homeowner in the face. Things only escalated from there.
The man who threw the brick tried to reach through the broken window and open the door. That’s when the homeowner confronted the man outside and fired several shots from his gun, hitting him multiple times.
As the Capital-Journal reports, the suspect fled the scene and was discovered lying in the backyard of a nearby home. He was transported to an area hospital to be treated for his injuries, which were described as life-threatening in a police news release. He is now out of surgery and expected to survive.
Meanwhile, the homeowner was also taken to a local hospital. His injuries included a broken nose from being hit in the face by the brick.
Police are still investigating the case. It is believed that the suspect lived in the same block as the homeowner.
