Polymer versus steel, single action versus everything, 9mm versus .45 ACP—there are still lots of contentious subjects in the world of handguns. Yet there is one thing most handgunners can agree on: the utility of lasers on defensive weapons.
Fans of laser/pistol combinations have a lot to be happy about with Kimber’s offerings that utilize Crimson Trace Lasergrips. I was recently able to test and evaluate the Kimber Master Carry Pro in .45 ACP, which features Crimson Trace’s Master Series Lasergrips, and after some serious range time, it became quite clear that this is a match made in heaven. The Master Carry Pro’s 4-inch, steel, match-grade barrel makes this 1911-style pistol quick to draw and more concealable in an outside-the-waistband (OWB) holster. The matte black slide is fitted to a full-sized, satin silver grip frame that provides plenty of room for all hand sizes and carries one additional round, increasing the gun’s total capacity to 8+1. The lightweight, aluminum “Round Heel” frame feels good in the hand and reduces the chances of the grip printing through clothing.
The Lasergrip turns on quickly with Crimson Trace’s Instinctive Activation button, which is located on the frontstrap, centered under your second finger when you grip the pistol. The laser is emitted from the top right portion of the grip panel, and is in no way hindered by the slide or your grip. The Lasergrip laser provides a quick, easy-to-see aiming point for those situations when you don’t have time to acquire your sights. It’s also a boon for when you have to shoot from a non-optimal position.
