The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is set to become the nation’s largest police agency outfitted with body cameras.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced Tuesday that he plans to equip a total of 7,000 officers with body cameras in 2015.
The plan starts with a total of 860 body cameras in the first quarter of 2015, which have been purchased from TASER International.
TASER’s AXON body-worn video camera will be the camera of choice. According to a release from TASER, the LAPD will also use a new storage plan.
The Officer Safety Plan includes all of the advanced features of Evidence.com, unlimited storage, a service plan that includes automatic upgrades of the AXON Cameras every 2.5 years and upgrades of the associated TASER devices every five years, as well as full hardware equipment warranties and service. The LAPD has selected the Officer Safety Plan as their subscription plan to EVIDENCE.com to maximize budget predictability and minimize total cost across both product suites.
“This is a huge step for law enforcement. No other major city is even close to implementation,” Police Chief Charlie Beck told the Associated Press.
