The CEOs of several major companies recently stepped out of the board room and onto the stump, using their collective clout to push certain gun control laws and sway the U.S. Senate. The corporate leaders signed a letter addressed to the Senate. In it, they called for background checks and red flag laws be passed.

What CEOs and Companies Are Pushing Gun Control Laws?

Leaders from Airbnb, Gap, Reddit, Royal Caribbean Cruises and Twitter signed the letter. Known 2A opponents such as Dick’s Sporting Goods and Levi Strauss predictably signed as well. The tone of the letter suggests the leaders believe their success in business gives them some right to influence politics.

“As leaders of some of America’s most respected companies and those with significant business interests in the United States, we are writing to you because we have a responsibility and obligation to stand up for the safety of our employees, customers and all Americans in the communities we serve across the country. Doing nothing about America’s gun violence crisis is simply unacceptable and it is time to stand with the American public on gun safety.”

The letter then transitions to so-called gun violence itself. Arguably, the letter here contains the most truthful statement of all: “It’s preventable.” But it fails to discuss safeguarding our schools with armed professionals, arming teachers, or making it easier for ordinary citizens to carry and protect against evil. Instead, it repeats the tired refrain for more gun laws.

“Gun violence in America is not inevitable; it’s preventable. There are steps Congress can, and must, take to prevent and reduce gun violence. We need our lawmakers to support common-sense gun laws that could prevent tragedies like these.”

Background Checks and Red Flag Laws

Finally, the CEOs call for the newest darlings from the gun-banning left to institute background checks and red flag laws. The letter fails to explain how these checks might violate an individual’s right to bear arms. The letter makes no mention of how red flag laws circumvent due process to strip away those rights.

“That’s why we urge the Senate to stand with the American public and take action on gun safety by passing a bill to require background checks on all gun sales and a strong Red Flag law that would allow courts to issue life-saving extreme risk protection orders.”

The letter to the Senate contains some familiar old faces and some new ones. Powerful leaders crying for more gun control. But hey, we appreciate the letter, and its signatures. It’s good to know who you’re fighting, even if your weapon is merely your wallet and your conscience.
