I have an old SIG P226RDAK chambered in .40. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have an optic cut slide. Even more unfortunate, the only optic cut slide available for it right now is 9mm. So, even with the decreasing price of optics, I still haven’t been able to add one to my P226. Until now. Meprolight has seen the problem and created a solution with the detachable Mepro MicroRDS.
The Meprolight Mepro MicroRDS
The mount is designed to attach to a pistol via the existing rear dovetail slot, replacing your current rear sight. As a result, you don’t need to have your slide drilled, tapped, or have an optic cut added by a gunsmith. So, no need to make an expensive alteration to your slide that cannot be undone.
The quick-detach (QD) adaptor kit mounts directly to the Meprolight TruDot, self-illuminating rear sight mount. This allows the optic to be removed quickly and the mount utilized as backup iron sights. Once removed, it can be placed back onto the firearm without the need to re-zero the sight.
Although you can utilize any red dot optic available on the market, the kit includes the Mepro MicroRDS. The Mepro MicroRDS features a 3 MOA red dot with adjustments for windage and elevation on the top and side. Likewise, buttons on the left side provide brightness adjustments for any lighting condition.
The large sight window offers a wide field of view with both eyes, regardless of conditions. Running on a single CR2032 battery, the Mepro MicroRDS does not need to be removed to change the battery. The battery compartment sits on the top of the optic in an easy-to-access location.
The kit is available in three different mounting options. First is the dovetail QD (Quick Detach) mount kit for non-optic cut slides. Next is the Optics-Ready QD mount kit for optics-ready slides. This allows you to add quick detach capabilities to your optic-ready pistol. Finally is the Optics Only kit, with Picatinny adaptor.
With the Picatinny adaptor installed on a rifle or shotgun, Meprolight TruDot mount attached to your pistol, and the QD adapter attached to your optic, you can transfer the optic between platforms quickly and easily.
Editor’s Note
One thing that I notice about the Meprolight Mepro MicroRDS is that it sits really high on the pistol. For this reason, it will take some getting used to, as it will not fall in the natural sight position. However, sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. Although it rides high, at least you have the option of an optic on a non-optic cut pistol.
