Intruder Shot By Homeowner In Botched Burglary Attempt

A Milwaukee homeowner shot and wounded an intruder Monday morning.

According to TODAY’S TMJ4, the homeowner — a 45-year-old Navy veteran with a concealed carry permit — was inside the house with his wife and four children when the burglar alarm went off in the garage.

“Her husband went back there to check to see what happened,” a relative who did not wish to be identified said. “There was a guy in there. [The intruder] lunged at him. He didn’t know if he had a gun or what. He did end up shooting the guy.”

The relative said the suspect was shot in the hip, though this hasn’t been confirmed. He was transported to an area hospital to be treated for his injuries.

The suspect has an extensive rap sheet that includes prior convictions for burglary in 2000 and 2010.

As TODAY’S TMJ4 points out, Wisconsin has a Castle Doctrine law that might protect the homeowner in this incident.

“These people have the right to protect themselves inside of their home,” said Nik Clark of the Wisconsin Carry advocacy group. “When you enter someone’s home or garage, that person has the right to defend themselves and their family. That should be a deterrent to criminals who might consider this kind of behavior.”
