Mossberg 590 Shockwave Background

Mossberg introduced the 590 Shockwave back in 2017, which feels like an eternity ago at this point. The platform immediately found its footing and gained popularity.

For those unfamiliar with it (for those of you living under a rock), the 590 Shockwave platform centers around the fact that it qualifies as a Non-NFA firearm by BATFE (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives). It requires no tax stamp for transfers. Attribute that to the overall length.

The three new models — one of which features a chainsaw grip attachment — up the “wow” factor significantly.

Built on Mossberg’s proven pump-action design, each 590 Shockwave features an overall length of 26.37 inches; 14-inch heavy-walled barrel; non-binding twin action bars; positive steel-to-steel lock-up; an anti-jam elevator; dual extractors; and an ambidextrous top-mounted safety.

The 590 Shockwave also features a magazine clean-out cap; drilled and tapped anodized aluminum receiver; cylinder bore barrel with a single brass bead sight; and sling swivel studs. Unique to the 590 Shockwave models are a “bird’s head” shaped-profile grip that allows for greater control while lessening felt recoil.

As a bonus, we also have a little vote for you. Our friends at Tactical Life put the Mossberg 500 up against the Remington 870. They wanted to see what readers thought was best. We’re aware that the 500 and 590 are different platforms, but we like the comparison. So head over to Tactical-Life.com and let your voice be heard.
